Toyota FJ80 Portal Axle Conversion

After twenty years of restoring and wheeling military vehicles I was ready for something a little more comfortable. That's when I started looking for a Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser. Within a couple of weeks I located a very clean '91 on eBay. I had planned for a mild lift and larger tires, but after getting the 80 home I parked it beside a Volvo C304 (6x6) that I had restored and noticed how similar the axle housings were. They both were passenger side drop differentials, they were about the same length, and the steering was on the same side.

After a couple of weeks of looking at the two vehicles side by side and extensive measuring I decided it was very feasible to do the axle swap. I picked up a set of Volvo C303 (4x4) axles from one of my MV trading buddies in Colorado. I wanted the C303 axles because they had the 5.99 gearing instead of the 7.19 gearing of the C304. With the portals you get 5" of ground clearance from the axles alone and vacuum operated selectable lockers. With the Volvo axles and a set of 38.5" Boggers the 80 has 17" of ground clearance, this makes for some strange looks from people and great rock crawling capabilities.
