It is real easy to steal something out of a Jeep. I had already installed a Tuffy Security Glovebox into Project Blue Oval YJ and I have plans for more secure storage in the future (cheap and easy, too!). Electronics are high on the grab list so radios, GPS, CBs, etc are money in the pocket of the opportunistic thief.
When I saw the Cobra 75 WX ST advertised in an ad, I thought it was a neat solution to keeping it where it belonged...in MY Jeep, not someone else's. The controls are all contained in the hand held portion of the unit and when it is not being used, it can be quickly disconnected from the solid mounted portion of the assembly, the remote connection box, and stored away securely in a locking truck or center console.
It features all 40 CB channels, 10 NOAA weather channels, Sound Tracker technology and pretty much anything a full size CB would have.
I wanted to be able to easily disconnect the handheld unit without reaching under the dash all the time, so, since I had my dash apart I scratched my head a while and came up with this stealth spot behind the center instrument pod.
It took a bit of fabbing, but it seems to have worked out. As you can see, the remote connection box does fit past all the instruments and I drilled the hole for the grommet just under the left most edge of the instrument pod. There is no real firm connection holding the cable in place where the jumper out of the box connects to the hand-held section of cable, but it seems to pinch it pretty well. I added a zip tie behind the grommet to help keep the assembly from pulling through. I also had to use a small hole saw to allow for the antenna connection to pass through the metal frame of the dash. If this all does not work out, I will move the connection box and the only thing visible of my folly will be the hole where the grommet was and a sticker or decal can fix that if I care about it.
